About me

Retired after 35 years in technology, now dabbling with tech and running as much as possible

I did Couch to 5K during the Covid lockdowns having not run since leaving school over 40 years ago. I did my first 5k in June 2020 in a time of 30:14, getting slower all the time, and with an average heart rate of 171, peaking at 182! This is the story of my running journey.

My first ever 5K Strava trace

This site provides me with a platform to write about two of my main interests – running and technology. At my age I suspect that many people would have been giving up running and taking up cycling to give their knees a rest, so I think the change is unusual. My transformation from keen cyclist to obsessed runner got off to a slow start, but there have been key turning points on the way. At some point I plan to write a book about my conversion – starting with Couch to 5k, it will describe my running journey “Beyond 5k”. I have the structure in my mind and the proposed chapters are published as a blog.

The technical topics will be more varied and will typically describe my tech projects. As a career “techie” who focused on the configuration and implementation of Enterprise Applications and Solution Architecture I had very little exposure to front end design, so a by-product of this site is that one day I might learn how to size and align images and controls properly!

I’ve been a keen runner for about five years, clocking up over 4,200 km on trails and roads. Experiencing a proper running track had become a significant goal (our school track was just grass!), and I was genuinely thrilled when I booked a session at the […]
Man running on ice
They say with age comes wisdom. I say with age comes more creative ways to ignore perfectly good advice. I’m 62 now, and recently found myself skating (badly) on the thin line between dedication and downright stupidity. It all started with that cold snap we had […]

Spoiler alert – this post is NOT about running! For those who have experienced the thrill of windsurfing, it’s more than just a sport – it can be an addiction, a way of life. Over 25 years, I spent countless hours on the water, chasing the […]
